Building Toward the Starting Line, One Goal at a Time
Tuesday 20th JanMy name is Thomas Cantara, and running has changed my life.
I live in Nashua, New Hampshire, work at Litchfield Middle School, and proudly compete with Manchester Special Olympics. Athletics, especially running, is my main sport right now, but one day I’d love to take on a triathlon. For me, this marathon isn’t just a race. It’s something I look forward to every year. It’s a reminder of how far I’ve come and how much more is possible.
There was a time when running felt impossible. I used to weigh 256 pounds, and over time, through running and eating healthier, I lost about 100 pounds. I didn’t do it overnight. I worked hard, stayed consistent, and focused on improving my running technique step by step. Those small changes added up in ways I never imagined.
That’s why the advice I’d give to anyone new to Special Olympics is simple: start with small goals and build off of those goals. That mindset has shaped everything for me, both as an athlete and as a person. Every improvement, no matter how small, matters.
I look up to Gabe Kapler for his leadership and discipline, and when I need an extra boost of motivation, you’ll probably hear “The Final Countdown” playing in my headphones. It reminds me that big moments are built from steady preparation.
By running this marathon, I hope people see what dedication and perseverance can do when athletes are given the chance to grow. Special Olympics New Hampshire has given me opportunities to challenge myself, believe in myself, and keep setting new goals. These miles represent more than a finish line. They represent progress, confidence, and the power of showing up for yourself day after day.
Thank you for being part of this journey and for supporting athletes like me as we keep building toward what’s next.
