Take the Plunge for a Cause – Hampton Beach, NH!

On February 9th, I’m braving the icy waters of Hampton Beach, NH, for the Polar Plunge to support Special Olympics, an incredible organization that empowers athletes with intellectual disabilities to achieve their goals, build confidence, and inspire all of us.

Every donation helps provide year-round training, competitions, and support for these amazing athletes. Your generosity makes a real difference in their lives and the communities they uplift.

Join me in making a splash for a great cause!
No amount is too small – every dollar brings us closer to inclusion, empowerment, and joy for all.

My first blog!

Friday 6th Dec

This is my first time writing a blog, so here we go! I wanted to share how I got into Special Olympics and what it has meant to me. For the past 12 years, I have been a volunteer basketball referee. Being able to use my skills, knowledge, and love for a game that has meant so much to me seemed like a no-brainer. It didn’t take long for me to realize that refereeing for Special Olympics was different—in the best way possible. Normally, as a referee, we are the most disliked people in the gym, and that’s before the game even starts. People seem to think refs have a bias about which team wins… guess what? We don’t!

Refereeing for Special Olympics was the first time coaches, parents, and players respected and wanted the refs there. I had never heard a “Thank You” and had never, ever been given hugs or high-fives. My mind was blown! So, I kept coming back year after year.

Having such a positive experience made me want to see how I could do more. So instead of deleting one of the Special Olympics event emails I received, I decided to take action instead of just thinking about it. New Hampshire has so many cool events to be a part of. I decided that the Summer Olympics felt right and volunteered as a helper with the Track and Field portion. This event got me directly involved with the athletes. It allowed me to get to know their names and personalities, cheer them on, make friendships, and even put medals around their necks. Again, mind blown!

At the Summer Games, I got to meet some of the Management Team from the New Hampshire branch, like Shelby Cote and Mary Conroy. It was there that I expressed my desire to do more. Since then, I have been a part of a softball tournament, a bowling tournament, and a Leadership Conference.

Ok, I’ll start wrapping this blog up… Special Olympics started as something where I would ref a few basketball games one day a year. It has turned into something I now recruit my family and friends to participate in. Being able to see the joy that competition, inclusion, sportsmanship, and respect bring to these athletes fills my heart. These athletes are so inspiring—I don’t have the words to describe it.

If you’re looking to make lifelong friends and smile so much your cheeks hurt the next day, you should volunteer!

THANK YOU to all the athletes and parents for sharing your special world with me…
